Our Story

It all started in 1991

While Kyle Doll was working for Burns Meats in a building identical to and beside the Airport Chalet.

Built in the 1940’s

to accommodate food for the workers building the Alaska Highway. Burns was sold to Maple Leaf Foods and closed the branch.

The Grocery People

known as TGP were supplying groceries to around 15 independent retail stores throughout the Yukon including Super A’s and Tags. They had always wanted a wholesale to complement their retail.

May of 1991

Kyle was hired as branch manager in May of 1991. There was success right from the beginning.

Spring of 1995

In spring of 1995, the government of health did an inspection and told them we had to do some major renovations or be evicted. TGP did not want to invest money in a building they did not own, so an exit strategy was planned. The president of TGP, Jim Crawford knew Charlie Grubisich as Charlie owned the Canada Bread and Saputo Dairyland Distributorships in the Yukon.

They got together one day

Jim proposed to Charlie, why don’t you take over the wholesale and find a building to move into and combine the wholesale with the distributorships. Charlie said that could work as the building he was renting was older and didn’t have the best image, but who is going to run it as he was not moving to Whitehorse. Jim told Charlie that Kyle has done a good job for them and would be nice if he could be a part of this.

2 hours later...

Charlie and Kyle met in a room at the Edgewater and 2 hours later walked out as partners. Charlie wanted to call the new business KD Distributing for Kyle’s initials. There was already a wholesale in town called Kelley Douglas who was referred to as KD. We then decided to call it G-P Distributing for Grubisich and Partner.

#37

After becoming partners with Charlie, Kyle learned that he was business partner #37 for him. Their offices in Grand Prairie were like episodes on Shark Tank. They had a reputation of buying companies and partnering with individuals. Their portfolio was varied, from a boat building company, vehicle dealerships, 3 Boston Pizza locations, a ladies wear store, an art gallery, a company that manufactured water slide equipment and the list goes on.

Buying Shares

So they truly were the best kind of partner to have. Charlie started downsizing the empire in 2015 and Kyle was the first that they approached to buy their shares.

Multi-Generational Change

Tyler Doll, Kyle’s son came back to the business in 2011. He started off in the warehouse and worked his way through each position, so that he could learn every aspect of the business. Tyler became the General Manager in 2018 and started the digital era of G-P.
